The World’s eyes

I have known you for all of your days

I guided your first step

and breathed your first breath

and will give you the air for your last

pushing out from you the words you began with

and the ones that will mark your end

Before you I wrote the book of your very life

my pen wrote you

with the waters of your mothers womb

I hold the vessel of your spirit above

Through your eyes

I witnessed my own colored skies

and when clouds rained from high

I disguised your tears with mine

Your body bathed in my rivers

and wound you out to sea

these oceans between Earth and Heaven

and your treasured motherland

I am her, and also the silty sands pulled from beneath your feet

as waves breathe ever gently

I rejoiced with you at the taste of sweet mango

and winced at the bitterness coffee

I felt your mind lift unto clouds those first few puffs

and the fire in your gut off agave shots

And I know the throb in your head as I lifted light unto your resting eyes

If only you knew how many of your ancestors made the same face!

I was there when they made their first drinks

from my barley and my wheat

I was the green tree, under which they layed

as they lulled off to sleep

I woke with them, and with you

as the summer sun rested on your total surface

how I loved when you relished that cool breeze

such a soft and blanketing reprieve

How I marveled and marveled with you

as you admired how I painted your skin

a palette of precious colors

curated by your distant kin

I have loved you as you have traveled far from me

for you have been my eyes,

and my very world has been

your sacred life

I will remember these and weep

————deeply

as you fall into my soils

and return to me

as from dust, so

too
